Step 1 of 4: Choose your photos

One main photo becomes the big picture. Then you choose 10 to 300 other photos: they become the tiles. Colourful close-up photos work best.

What is a photo mosaic?

One big picture that, up close, is made of hundreds of small photos. From a distance you see the main photo, up close all the moments you sent in.

How many photos do you need?

One main photo and at least ten others, up to 300. From 30 onwards it looks great. The number of tiles is fixed: with 100 photos each photo appears about 17 to 19 times, spread across the picture. More photos means more variety, not smaller photos.

How big will each photo be?

At normal density each photo is 8 mm on 30 × 40, 14 mm on 50 × 70, 18 mm on 60 × 90 and 20 mm on 70 × 100 cm. Choose Fewer in the Studio and the photos get bigger; choose More and they get smaller. You see the number for your choice before you order.

Which photos work best?

For your main photo, choose an image with plenty of contrast and one clear subject, such as a portrait against a calm background. The other photos can be as varied as you like: colourful, not too dark and each with one clear subject.

Make it yourself or have it made?

For a large print the file has to be big enough. If you have your photo mosaic made by us, we rebuild it at 300 dpi for printing. So your preview is never simply blown up.

Frequently asked questions

What is a photo mosaic?

One big picture made up of hundreds of small photos. From a distance you see the main photo, up close all the individual memories it is made of.

How much does a photo mosaic cost?

A poster costs € 34,95 in 30 × 40. Framed or on aluminium costs more. In the Studio you immediately see the price for every size.

How many photos do I need for a photo mosaic?

One main photo and at least ten others, up to 300. From 30 onwards it looks great. With 100 photos each photo appears about 17 to 19 times, spread across the picture; the more photos, the more variety.

Why does a photo mosaic turn out blurry?

Usually not because of the print, but because of the size. If each photo is smaller than 5 mm, you can no longer recognise a face. Our sizes are 30 × 40, 50 × 70, 60 × 90 and 70 × 100 cm; at normal density each photo is 8 to 20 mm. In the Studio you see in advance whether it is sharp enough.

Which photo mosaic size should I choose?

On 30 × 40 (8 mm per photo) the photos are small: you mainly see them up close. On 50 × 70 (14 mm per photo) you recognise every photo up close. If you also want to see them individually when you step back, choose 60 × 90 (18 mm, our advice) or 70 × 100 (20 mm per photo).

Can I see the result before I order?

Yes. You make a full preview without an account and without paying, and you can adjust the style as often as you like.

What happens to my photos?

We only use them for your mosaic. If you don't order, we delete them after 7 days. If you do, after 60 days.
